Description
Title
An
Account
of the
Work
of the
Industrial
Research
Division
Description
April
13
,
1931
,
G.A
.
Pennock
sent
C.W
.
Bergquist
a
report
titled
: An
Account
of the
Work
of the
Industrial
Research
Division
. The
Industrial
Research
Division
was
established
in
January
,
1929
to
centralize
the
test
room
study
, the
employee
interviewing
program
, and the
supervisory
training
program
. The
research
in the
test
room
began
as a
study
of
employee
effectiveness
and
wanting
to
learn
more
about
those
conditions
under
which
people
work
best
.
Researchers
assumed
an
employees
health
,
mental
state
, and
zest
for
work
would
affect
productivity
. In the
test
room
,
operators
received
physical
exams
, and had
recorded
comments
,
attendance
irregularities
,
hours
of
sleep
;
social
case
study
,
intelligence
and
dexterity
tests
,
diet
,
earnings
,
temperature
,
humidity
,
specific
changes
in
conditions
and
environmental
changes
,
productivity
, and
changes
in
operators
physical
condition
and
mental
attitude
and
zest
for
work
.
Researchers
found
that
more
testing
was
needed
. In the
test
room
,
physical
conditions
changed
little
, but
mental
tone
and
zest
for
work
had
increased
as had
productivity
. The
impact
of
mental
tone
had been
underrated
and there was
no
good
measure
of
mental
tone
. The
personal
interview
was
developed
as a
tool
to
study
employee
attitudes
throughout
the
Hawthorne
Plant
.
Dr
.
Elton
Mayo
assisted
in
developing
the
interview
technique
:
introduction
,
conversationally
following
any
point
mentioned
by
employee
;
take
part
in
conversation
only
as
needed
to
keep
employee
talking
,
press
any
expression
of
stress
further
.
Employees
felt
valued
by
interview
.
Comments
were
analyzed
,
typed
on
separate
forms
, and
studied
further
.
Interviews
gained
much
information
about
the
human
problem
, and
gathered
important
but
obscure
information
about
the
company
. The
research
pointed
to the
need
to have
future
in-depth
interviews
.
Interview
comment
analysis
lead
to the
development
of
topics
used
in
supervisory
training
conferences
.
Supervisors
of
equal
rank
were
place
together
for
training
.
Training
helped
supervisors
began
to
supervise
the
person
, not the
job
.
About
2/3
people
lose
their
jobs
because
they
lack
social
understanding
. This
training
began
to
reverse
that. The
training
reconciled
the
companys
policies
with the
employees
desires
.
Appendices
included
sample
employee
interviews
,
charts
showing
interview
analysis
,
supervisory
training
conference
materials
,
lengthy
reflections
from
Dr
.
Mayo
, and a
summary
of
supervisors
questionnaire
