:
Effect
of
workday
length
on
worker
production
Description
Discusses
the
increase
of
productivity
in the
test
room
.
Productivity
increased
when
the
workday
was
shortened
.
Lower
production
on
Monday
and
Saturday
was
thought
to be
due
to
mental
preoccupation
in the
majority
of
cases
, not
cumulative
fatigue
.
It
was also
determined
that
lack
of
sleep
has a
minor
impact
on
productivity
. The
vascular
skin
reaction
test
was
given
to the
test
group
.
Vascular
skin
reaction
is
a
test
of
fatigue
.
Fatigue
causes
a
white
line
on the
wrist
to
disappear
more
quickly
than would
occur
if the
employee
had
sufficient
rest
. This
test
showed
that there was
minor
fatigue
throughout
the
day
. On
August
27
,
1928
,
two
new
test
groups
were
studied
. The
first
new
group
of
five
girls
, also
relay
assemblers
, were
chosen
to be
paid
as a
small
group
,
rather
than with the
larger
group
of
relay
assemblers
;
however
, they were
kept
working
with the
larger
group
and with the
same
supervision
. This
group
increased
their
performance
while
in a
small
group
, but
productivity
dropped
when
they were
put
back
in the
larger
group
. The
second
new
group
,
five
women
mica
splitters
, were
moved
into a
test
room
, but their
pay
was not
changed
. The
workers
were
given
two
ten
minute
breaks
,
one
in the
morning
and
one
in the
evening
. This
groups
productivity
increased
. A
study
of a
group
of
typists
was also
begun
. As a
result
of these
studies
,
3,000
employees
were
given
breaks
,
one
in the
morning
and
one
in the
afternoon
. The
company
also
began
a
supervisory
training
program
to
assist
supervisors
in
improving
the
work
environment
and
thus
raising
the
morale
of
employees
.
