ExtentBound Books and Folders
Abstract The Northern Pacific Railway company was the first railroad to run through the northern tier of states, connecting Lake Superior to Puget Sound. Its contruction began with an estimated forty-seven to sixty million acres of land grants from the federal government, the largest ever. This collection highlights three aspects of the Northern Pacific's history, including its multiple corporate ownerships, changing hands from the likes of J.P. Morgan to the Burlington Northern, Inc. The second aspect is labor history of the railroad, including unionism, strikes, and working conditions. The third section covers the settlement and development of the land with the government's economic development plans for agriculture, irrigation, and other industries. All three sections focus mostly on the period before 1923.
