Transforming the Oklahoma Prairie a

Adding to the growth of the university’s campus in the 1920s was the construction of two residence halls for women, Hester Hall and Robertson Hall. While first occupied in 1926, the space around the two dorms took on a new look at the close of the 1930s. The halls also benefited from the WPA grant to OU with the addition of a lily pond and variety of shrubs and flowers. The picture above shows the Elm Avenue entrance to the twin halls flanked by low shrubs, plants in stone vases, and flower beds. The photo below is a view taken from just south of the Elm Avenue entrance and shows the lily pond and flower beds, planted with elephant ear philodendrons, water lilies, hyacinths, and other annuals and perennials. Privet hedge was used along the building foundations.
