Description
Title
Hawthorne
illumination
study
Description
Two
documents
,
both
of
which
concern
illumination
studies
, are
presented
. The
first
is
a
report
on the
illumination
study
at
Hawthorne
,
which
began
Nov
.
24
,
1924
and
ended
April
30
,
1927
. In this
study
,
candles
of
various
lengths
were
introduced
in
three
departments
.
Productivity
increased
in
two
departments
,
although
lighting
was
determined
not to be the
sole
cause
of this
increase
,
while
in the
third
no
correlation
between
lighting
and
productivity
could
be
found
.
Two
further
tests
were
conducted
on
one
department
which
was
divided
into
two
separate
groups
,
one
which
received
variable
lighting
and the
other
lighting
which
would
always
be
consistent
.
One
test
used
artificial
plus
natural
light
, the
second
artificial
light
only
.
Both
groups
increased
productivity
almost
equally
.
Finally
,
two
girls
were
tested
with the
light
dimmed
, then
brightened
; then, a
test
where
the
girls
were
told
the
light
was
dimmer
or
brighter
, but the
light
stayed
the
same
.
Production
did
not
decrease
due
to
lighting
.
It
was
concluded
that there were
too
many
other
human
variables
in this
study
which
could
not be
controlled
. The
second
document
is
a
journal
article
written
by
C.E
.
Snow
which
discusses
illumination
studies
at
five
different
factories
in
various
regions
of the
United
States
,
one
of
which
is
the
Hawthorne
plant
.
It
reaches
the
conclusion
that
it
is
extremely
difficult
to
eliminate
variables
in
illumination
studies
,
especially
the
human
psychological
variable
.
