Letter to Col. Wm. Wilson, Choctaw Agent, from his brother, George Folsom, Chief of Pusha District re. whether the Choctaws should abide by the fourth article of the treaty between the Choctaws and Chickasaws or whether they should appoint new commissioners. Nov. 1851. Memorial approved by the Chickasaw Council and sent to the General Council of the Choctaw Nation from Jas. N. McLish, President re. violations of the Compact of 1837. Oct. 2, 1852. Letter to the Chiefs of the Choctaw Nation from Winchester Colbert, Davis Iames, Sampson Folsom, and Jackson Frazier, re. proposal to amend the portion of the Treaty of 1837 concluded between the Choctaws and Chickasaws. Nov. 10, 1857. Motion to appoint four Commissioners on the part of the Choctaw Nation to meet the Chickasaw Commissioners re. the boundary line dispute. Nov. 12, 1857. Eleven (11) letters between the Choctaw Commissioners and the Chickasaw Commissioners re. an amendment to the 2nd article of the Treaty of 1837 which would have altered the eastern boundary of the Chickasaw District taking in a portion of the Pushmataha District. Another issue discussed was the financial difficulties of the Chickasaw District. The letter of November 18, 1857 indicates that the Choctaw Commissioners stated that they had no right to amend the Treaty of 1837 or change the eastern boundary. They did propose a national fund for the purpose of supporting the government of the Choctaw Nation. Nov. 13, 1857-Nov. 18, 1857. 4 Papers relating to Choctaws' education and the Armstrong Academy. Letter to the Trustees of the Armstrong Academy from Jos. Waller of the Domestic mission of the Southern Baptist Convention re. the Armstrong Academy's passing from under the control of the Baptist denomination by an act of the Choctaw National Council. Correspondence (1824-1881) of Pitchlynn with prominent citizens and family members in the Choctaw Nation regarding events and troubles within the nation; Pitchlynn's personal journals (1815); Pitchlynn's diary (1828-1832); official reports (1825-1841) of the Choctaw Academy and Missionary Station in Kentucky; and Pitchlynn family records (1806-1867). The collection also includes a signed copy of the articles of surrender and peace negotiated between the Choctaw Nation and the United States at the close of the Civil War, and extensive correspondence reflecting the state of the Choctaw Nation just prior to, and during the Civil War years, with special regard to slavery. |
