Abstract The Great Northern Railway encompassed several railway companies, including the St. Paul and Pacific Railway Company and the Minnesota and Pacific Railroad Company, by way of owning the majority of stock. After financial problems, the Northern Pacific Railway Company disposed of the Stock and the St. Paul, Minneapolis and Manitoba Railway Company took over receivership of the company. The histories, related papers, maps, engineering drawings, correspondence and corporate records pertaining to these railroads are contained in this collection.

These papers are divided into 3 series, Board of Directors Minutes and Corporate Histories, Labor and Settlement and Development.

Scope and Content Note

The Great Northern Railway Company had a great influence on the history of the northwestern frontier. The company was a pioneer in business and encouraged farming and other development along it routes. This collection is divided into three sections, corporate history including minutes and bylaws, the labor section which tells the story of the workers on the railroad and the third section documents the company's efforts to recruit settlers along its routes.

The lines that were built in these years include: St. Anthony to Breckenridge, St. Anthony to Sauk Rapids, St. Paul to St. Anthony, East St. Cloud to St. Vincent (St. Vincent Extension), East St. Cloud to Melrose and Barnsville to Snake River.
