Book Description	A Tale of Two Cities is a historical novel written by Charles Dickens in 1859. Through the fate of several main characters, the story tells about the life of people living in London and Paris before and during the French Revolution. In 1775, Dr. Manette is released after 18-year imprisonment in the Bastille. Mr. Jarvis Lorry, a clerk of Tellson's Bank in London and a good friend of Dr. Manette, gets the information and takes Dr. Manette's daughter, Lucie, to Paris to find him. After they see Dr. Manette at the Defarges' house, they are shocked to learn that Dr. Manette has lost both his memory and sense. He spends his time working on shoes. Mr. Lorry and Lucie bring Dr. Manette back to London. Lucie plans to bring her father back to health and sanity with her love and compassion. Five years later, Lucie's husband, a Frenchman, Charles Darney secretly goes back to Paris to save the faithful servant of his family--Gabelle, who has been erroneously arrested. However, Charles is captured and accused of being a spy after he arrives in Paris. Having learned that Charles is in prison, Lucie, her daughter, Dr. Manette and Jarvis all rush to Paris to save him. With help from the English lawyers, Sydney Carton and Mr. Stryver, Charles Darnay is acquitted. But he is rearrested and sentenced to death soon after his release because Madame Defarge seeks personal revenge against the Evremonde family of which Charles is a member. At this critical moment, Sydney Carton, who loves Lucie, decides to sacrifice his own life to save Darney. He gets Darney out of the prison and replaces him by staying there himself. Secured by Carton's death, Darney, Lucie, and their daughter return to London safely
