Christmas
stories

Dickens

story

1846

the
story
of a
man
named
Doctor
Jeddler
who
is
a
philosopher
about
life
regarding
it
as a
big
joke
for the
most
part
. He has
two
daughters

Marion
and
Grace
. His
daughter
Marion
is
engaged
to
marry
the
doctor's
ward
,
Alfred
Heathfield
but she
runs
away
the
night
before
her
wedding
supposedly
eloping
with a
worthless
young
man
named
Michael
Warden
.
Eventually
her
sister
marries
Alfred
Heathfield
and
Marion
returns
home
confessing
that she
left
after
realizing
her
sister
Grace
loved
Alfred
thereby
sacrificing
her
happiness
for that of her
sister
. She also
reveals
that she
didn't
really
elope
but had been
staying
at the
country
home
of her
Aunt
Martha
. She
does
eventually
end
up
marrying
Michael
Warden
. There
is
also a
sub-plot
throughout
the
story
about
the
Doctor's
maidservant
,
Clemency
Newcome
, and the
man
she
eventually
marries
named
Benjamin
Britain
who
works
as a
manservant
to the
Doctor
