then
apprenticed
to an
undertaker
but
decides
to
run
away
after
being
mistreated
there. He
ends
up
on the
street
of
London
where
he
is
befriended
by a
young
thief
commonly
known
as The
Artful
Dodger
who
takes
him
home
with him to a
criminal
lair
run
by
Fagin
.
Oliver
is
not
well-suited
to a
life
of
crime
being
caught
both
times
he
attempts
to
participate
in
one
. The
people
he
meets
through
these
two
experiences
ultimately
lead
to his
being
rescued
from his
miserable
circumstances
, the
mystery
of his
parentage
solved
and
living
relatives
are
discovered
, and
ultimately
being
adopted
by a
kindly
benefactor
