Character Description	Pip, an orphan, is the protagonist and narrator of Great Expectations. When Pip meets Miss Havisham and Estella, he becomes unhappy with his life. He is glad to receive money from an unknown benefactor to go to London to become a gentleman. He is embarrassed when Joe Gargery comes to visit. After finding out that the benefactor is Magwitch, he slowly comes to see his ingratitude. As Joe nurses him back to health, he becomes grateful and accepting. He goes to work with Herbert Pocket, living frugally and paid his debts

Book Description	Great Expectations is Dickens's 13th novel. It appeared in monthly installments from December 1860 to August 1961 in the periodical All the Year Round. It was also published in the United States in Harper's Weekly. It is one of Dickens's best loved stories with a thrilling plot and complex tones of retrospection. Written in first person, Great Expectations is a novel depicting growth and personal development. Major themes include crime, social class, and ambition. Pip is named for his deceased father Philip Pirrip. He is an orphan; raised by an older sister and her husband Joe Gargery, a blacksmith. He assists convict Magwitch in his attempted escape. Magwitch allows his capture to insure that his enemy Compeyson is also captured. Sent to Australia with a capital threat to never return to England, Magwitch becomes wealthy. Pip becomes the playmate of Estella, the adopted daughter of Miss Havisham. He falls in love with Estella. As a young man, he receives a large sum of money and goes to London to become a gentleman. Estella marries Bentley Drummle, a cruel brute. Years later, Magwitch returns to England to reveal that he is Pip's benefactor. After Pip confronts Miss Havisham about Estella's history, Miss Havisham stands to close to the fireplace and is burned and dies of her injuries. Pip and his friends Herbert Pocket and Startop attempt to get Magwitch out of England by boat, however, Compeyson has spied on them and reports them to the police. During Magwitch's capture, he drowns Compeyson. Magwitch was injured and dies before his execution date. Pip, deeply in debt, becomes ill and is nursed back to health by his brother-in-law Joe. Pip becomes employed in a shipping house in the East with Herbert Pocket. This novel had two endings. In the original, Pip meets Estella on the streets. Drummle has died and she has remarried; Pip remains single. Publishers told Dickens it was too sad, so he wrote an alternative ending: Pip meets widow Estella at the ruins of Miss Havisham's house and feels they will never part. Most critics feel the original ending is more consistent with the rest of the novel
