Book Description
The
Haunted
Man
and the
Ghost's
Bargain
is
the
fifth
and
last
of
Dickens's
long
stories
with a
Christmas
theme
. This
book
,
which
is
centered
around
a
chemist
and
lecturer
Redlaw
,
is
more
about
the
spirit
of the
holidays
than
about
the
holidays
themselves
.
Redlaw
often
broods
over
the
grief
from his
past
. He
is
haunted
by an
awful
ghostly
likeness
of
himself
. This
phantom
offers
him the
power
to
forget
his
sorrows
,
wrongs
, and
trouble
without
cancelling
his
knowledge
.
After
first
hesitance
,
Redlaw
finally
agrees
to
accept
the
power
. He
becomes
wrathful
, and
spreads
his
bitterness
to
others
,
such
as
Swidgers
,
Tetterbys
and his
students
. At
last
Redlaw
prays
the
phantom
to
return
.
It
returns
with the
shade
of
Milly
Swidger
,
who
is
the
only
person
who
can
avoid
the
bitterness
.
Milly
tells
Redlaw
that
it
is
important
to
remember
past
sorrows
and
wrongs
so
that
one
can
forgive
those
responsible
and
unburden
one's
soul
. The
story
concludes
with
everyone
back
to
normal
