Book Description	The Chimes, written in Genoa, Italy, is the second of Dickens' Christmas stories in which he attempts to convince the upper classes to have compassion for the poor. Taking place on New Year's Eve, a poor man named Trotty begins to despair about his plight and that of other poor people. Hearing church bells, he climbs to the church tower where he encounters the bell spirits and goblins. They proceed to show him visions of future events involving his daughter Meg, her fianc- Richard, and two poor people he had just met named Will and Lilian. In one vision, where his daughter is on the verge of committing suicide, he begs the spirits to save her at which point he is able to touch her. He then wakes up from his dream with a renewed sense of purpose in life, and helps his daughter and her fianc- to see the brighter side of life, encouraging them to renew their decision to wed
