Character Name	Gashford, Mr.
Character Description	Mr. Gashford is the secretary to Lord George Gordon. Gashford had been a schoolfellow of Mr. Geoffrey Haredale and Sir. John Chester at St. Omer's in France. He is a recreant Roman Catholic who has great interest in Lord George Gordon's mission. Under the Lord's influence, he "abjured the errors of the Romish church". He cunningly instigates Hugh and his associates to be violent during the Gordon Riots. After the Riots are suppressed, Gashford subsists "for a time upon his traffic in his master's secrets", and then becomes a government spy. Years later, he poisons himself to death
Book Title - Featuring Character	Barnaby Rudge
Book Description	Barnaby Rudge is the fifth novel which was begun in 1839 and finished in 1841. It is also the first of Dickens's two historical novels. This novel is based on the anti-Catholic riots - the Gordon Riots - instigated by Lord George Gordon in 1780, seen through the eyes of the good-hearted title character, the idiot Barnaby Rudge. The story describes the life of the residents of a small village in Epping Forest, just outside London, in 1775 and shows the brutality of the capital punishment system of the time. After Lord George Gordon and his followers arrive at the Maypole, the stability of village life is interrupted by his "No Popery" movement which incites a mob to riot. Lord George Gordon and the riots are dutifully dealt with in the story, but the book is largely taken over by its lighter characters, such as Grip the raven, the Varden family
